About Kyleigh and Galactosemia:
Kyleigh Lydon is a 5 year old little girl who was diagnosed with Classical Galactosemia as an infant. Classical Galactosemia is a rare metabolic disorder in which only 1 in 80,000 newborns a year are diagnosed with. If left untreated as high as 75% of infants will die.
Kyleigh is a happy, loving, little girl, and is the big sister to Samantha age 4, Sean age 2 and her two dogs, Zack and Louie.
Babies diagnosed with galactosemia are born without the enzyme that breaks down lactose and galactose in the body. If not metabolized, galactose becomes a toxin. It can cause organ failure, blindness, even death. There is no cure. There is no treatment.
There is only vigilant monitoring of every morsel of food that they eat. One morsel of galactose could be fatal. Monitoring food is not enough. The body generates its own galactose. There is no control over how much each body creates. It is so rare that no money has been put into research to find a treatment or cure, the ratio of people with this disease is one in 80,000.
